What is needle felting?

What is Needle Felting?

In a very brief and simple definition of needle felting, we can say:

"Needle felting is a textile art that, as the name suggests, involves the use of special needles with barbs on the tip. As you 'poke' (in a perpendicular motion to the base), the needle interlocks the wool fibers, allowing you to create a wide variety of felted objects."

It’s a very simple and fun art to do.

The best part about needle felting is that there are no rules. You can make whatever you want and let your creativity run free! There are many different things you can create.

Nowadays, this type of art is becoming a popular way to relieve stress, and it can be done with minimal effort.

What Do You Need to Start Felting?

All the materials you need to start felting (needle felting) are a bit of carded or combed wool, felting needles, and a felting base.

What’s the Difference Between Combed Wool and Carded Wool?

Are Felting Needles the Same as Regular Needles?

No. Felting needles are special needles that have small barbs or notches on the tip. In the image below, you can see in detail how they look.

What Are the Barbs or Notches on Felting Needles For?

The barbs or notches are there to "grab" the wool fibers and interlock them to create a unique and compact piece.

Can I Start This Needle Felting Technique Without a Felting Base?

No, at least it’s not recommended!

The sponge serves as a work base and allows the wool to be pierced safely without the risk of pricking yourself.

Needle felting is very easy, but sometimes when you’re just starting, it can seem strange and confusing. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below.

The advantage of needle felting is that it can be done anywhere, without requiring special conditions or much experience.

This is considered the Dry Felt technique. The fibers are interlaced and compacted with one or several special needles. It is an easy and practical technique. With it you can make:
